2004 Season Match ReportsSaturday 3rd July 2004
11-3's ( 0 )  Padstow; United ( 4 )
We played the one of the competition heavyweights and were by no means embarrassed. Yes we were beaten soundly, but when you consider the last time we played this team were defeated 0-12, it is a great acheivement that we were able to restrict Padstow to only four goals and this was evident with their coach demanding more from their players and more goals. We played with heart and determination, we were missing some of our more influential players, but that did not stop us from putting in a good performance. When you consider that we effectively gifted them two goals through our own fault, this was a good performance. Im sure the opposition came into the match thinking that this time they might put 15 or more past us, but to our credit we hung in there with some desperate defending from joint Players of the Match James Kellis and John Gardicotis, both saving our bacon on numerous occassions with great last-ditch defending. Our other joint Player of the Match was Nicole Cooper, who didn't stop trying and was involved in everything, defending and launching the odd counter-attack and was terrific. A terrific effort from all other players, every one of them trying their best and working much more efficiently together. Perhaps we can still improve our marking, especially from corners and also work on our kicking and especially "lifting" the ball off the ground when we kick. We can also definately improve getting to the ball first and winning the 50-50 contests for the ball. All in all a pretty solid effort and although this match was a loss, it felt more like a win, a moral victory if you will, considering what happened when we played this team previously and the effort shown by all the players today. A break next week and then back into it against another competition heavyweight, this time East Bankstown. We will once again need to come out prepared to play well and give 100% yet again.
